Susan Hopgood is both the President of Education International (EI) and the Federal Secretary of the Australian Education Union (AEU). She became President of EI in 2009 and was re-elected in 2011 ,2015 and most recently at the EI 8th World Congress in Bangkok in July 2019. Susan first started her career teaching mathematics in secondary schools in Victoria, where she also joined the teacher’s union and became an active member and later, union official. She was elected Federal Secretary of the AEU in 2006, the union which organises teachers and education workers in public schools, early childhood, and technical and further education (TAFE) across Australia. She was the first woman to hold the position. Susan is active at national, regional, and international levels in her work, and a Vice President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU). She is committed to the achievement of a fair and socially just world and believes that public education for all is crucial to achieving this.
